We are seeking a skilled Tool Maker to join our clients manufacturing team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the accurate and efficient operation of manual milling machines and other associated machinery, contributing to the production of high-quality components. The successful candidate will have a strong engineering background, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to interpret complex technical drawings to produce high-quality tools to tight tolerances.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manufacture new tools, jigs, fixtures, and dies to precise engineering specifications.
- Refurbish, modify, and maintain existing tools to ensure ongoing production efficiency and reliability.
- The use manual and CNC machinery, including lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, and wire eroders is essential
- CNC milling experience is desirable but not essential
- Perform tool fitting, assembly, and testing to ensure correct function and dimensional accuracy.
- Read and interpret technical drawings, CAD files, and engineering documentation.
- Carry out quality inspections throughout the toolmaking process to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Work closely with the design, production, and maintenance teams to support tooling requirements.
- Assist in problem-solving and root cause analysis when tooling issues arise in production.
- Ensure all tools are stored, labelled, and maintained in accordance with company procedures.
- Adhere to health & safety standards at all times, including correct use of PPE.
- Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment.
- Accurately complete job records and relevant production documentation.
Person Specification
- Time-served Toolmaker or equivalent engineering qualification.
- Proven experience in a toolmaking role, ideally within a manufacturing or engineering environment.
- Strong manual machining skills; CNC experience would be an advantage.
- Excellent understanding of engineering drawings, tolerances, and machining practices.
- Experience with a range of workshop equipment including lathes, mills, surface grinders, and bench tools.
- Knowledge of tool steels, heat treatment processes, and tool maintenance practices.
- Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Self-motivated, disciplined, and quality focused.
- Organised and able to manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
- A practical, hands-on approach with a willingness to learn and adapt.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to continuous improvement and workplace safety.
Qualifications
- Recognised apprenticeship or vocational qualification in Toolmaking, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline (preferred).
- Forklift and first aid certification (advantageous but not essential).
